      Chris Soole – Saxophone

      Chris Martin – Piano

      Lyndon Gray – Double Bass

      Josh Baldwin – Drums

Inspired by the rhythmic language of South Indian classical music, Lyndon Gray's iconic quartet held a mid-week residency in Adelaide for ten years. Find out why!

The New Cabal occupy a special place in the canon of Adelaide jazz groups as the stalwart group which held down a weekly residency for ten years at inner city venue La Bohème. The group performed original material and featured countless interstate and international guests. This gig was a beloved institution and popular haunt for jazz lovers until the venue was forced to close in the middle of 2019. The New Cabal has toured around Australia and accompanied many visiting musicians such as Vardan Ovsepian (US), Joel Frahm (US) and John Riley (US). Their weekly gig has also hosted many guests from the national scene including James Muller, James Macaulay, David Theak, Stephen Magnusson, Ted Vining, Matthew Sheens and Hugh Stuckey.

The group is led by Lyndon Gray, an Adelaide born bassist who has performed with many elite Australian jazz musicians including Stephen Magnusson, Zac Hurren, Julien Wilson, David Ades, Ted Vining, Tony Gould, Paul Grabowsky and Paul McNamara. Lyndon has also received two ARIA awards as a member of the folk/alternative country group The Audreys, and recently completed a PhD. exploring South Indian rhythmic devices and their integration into jazz. Also notching up the full ten years are two legendary SA musicians, saxophonist Chris Soole (who the Sydney Morning Herald described as “a saxophonist utterly devoid of affectation, who generates a broad, warm sound, and plays with consummate conviction and economy”) and pianist Dr Chris Martin. A more recent addition to the group is drummer Josh Baldwin who was a finalist in the Wangaratta National Jazz Award in 2018.

The New Cabal recorded their first album in 2013 and recorded again in 2019 to mark a decade of performances.
